questions such as:

How are we influenced by the generations that came before us?

Sugar and Schmooze

Celebrate Purim and early spring in the sugarbush!

See an old-school sugar operation that the Crowley Family runs at Living Tree and share in the joy of fresh sap and syrup and the coming of spring. We’ll parade to wake up Mother Earth and honor the Jewish festival of Purim, and we’ll also celebrate with the traditional Purim customs of creating gifts for others and performing skits (in the sugarbush—Living Tree-style). Hibernation season is over, so lets celebrate! People of all faiths are welcome.

  • Come in costume, if you’d like!

  • Be prepared to walk down a muddy path to the sugar house.

  • Bring cash or check to purchase fresh maple syrup to bring home or gift to someone.

Admission based on sliding-scale donation: $8–$25 per person or $18–$54 per family suggested. Funds support community programming and outdoor education.

VIEWS OF ISRAEL FROM ISRAEL

1:00 pmSunday, Jan. 28
CBE Social Hall

A panel discussion with friends in Israel will take place on Zoom with Rabbis Michael Cohen and Osnat Eldar, Dr. Shai Golan, and Ms. Clare King Lassman. They will share their understanding of the war situation and its effect on Israeli life.  These presenters will join us from Israel via Zoom.  Lance Wang will serve as moderator for this panel discussion.  Time for audience questions and comments will follow.

About the speakers.

  • Rabbi Osnat Eldar, a Reform rabbi, serves Kehilat Salaam Yaakov in Zikhron Ya'akov and is a leader in progressive social activism there.

  • Rabbi Michael Cohen (whom we know well!) is a Reconstructionist rabbi on the faculty of Bennington College and the Arava Institute, whose focus on environmental activism serves as a bridge between Jewish and Palestinian (and other Arab) cultures

  • Dr. Shai Golan practices Chinese medicine in Zikhron Yaakov and, as a member of Physicians for Human Rights, has volunteered with a mobile clinic in the West Bank

  • Ms. Clare King Lassman is a fundraiser and development specialist for the Givat Haviva School and works with the Akko Arab-Jewish Community Centre, both of these organizations building bridges across the Jewish-Arab divide in Israel

Shabbat Shira & Tu B'Shvat

Shabbat Shira & Tu B'Shvat

In the Land of Israel-Palestine, the almond trees are blossoming. Whether or not you have ever participated in a Tu B’Shvat Seder before, please join us in celebrating this fun, tasty, multi-layered holiday. Tree foods, challah and grape juice provided with the support of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation’s Rekindle Shabbat grant. The seder itself consists of foods that grow on trees. Feel free to bring other foods to supplement. As is true of the Passover seder, there is an order to the Tu B’Shvat Seder, although it is more flexible than the Pesach order. The Tu B’Shvat seder was created by Kabbalists in 16th century Tsfat (aka Safed) in Northern Israel — the same mystics who created the Kabbalat Shabbat service.

You are also invited to bring tree-related poems and songs.

If you are able to help with set up for this seder, (preferably by coming at 9:30, before Shabbat Shira services begin), please contact ravamita@bajcvermont.org.
