VERMONT TEACHERS INVITED TO GATHER FOR VITAL LESSONS, RESOURCES TO EXAMINE CONSEQUENCES OF CHOICE
Vermont Holocaust Memorial Sponsors Workshop March 21st in Woodstock, VT
Jeffersonville, VT (February 28, 2023) – Teachers from throughout the greater Vermont area are invited to take part in the fourth professional development workshop organized by the Vermont Holocaust Memorial (VTHM). The group is the State’s sole voice advocating for Holocaust education as a means of transmitting the tragic lessons of the Holocaust to combat antisemitism and intolerance.
“Prejudice and hatred, including antisemitism and other forms of racism, are on the rise,” said Debora Steinerman, president and cofounder of VTHM. “Critical thinking and analysis serves as a catalyst to compel students to work toward making changes in their own lives and larger society. Teachers must be provided with the tools and insights to help their students understand those choices. All of us are better for the dedication of Vermont teachers --and the schools they represent-- participating in this workshop.”
The Tuesday, March 21, 2023 workshop will take place in Woodstock. The theme, “Choices Matter: Complicity and Action During the Holocaust,” will be presented in collaboration with Echoes & Reflections, a not-for-profit educational organization. The workshop will examine the range of choices and decisions made by individuals, communities, and nations during the Holocaust as a powerful lens through which to study this period of history. Educators will explore the motivations of groups and individuals to better understand how one can shift from a bystander role to an upstander role.
“Helping students understand the consequences of their actions both inside the social media sphere, and in day-to-day life, remains one of the foremost responsibilities not only of educators, but of all schools and communities,” said Melissa Mott, Director of Antisemitism, Holocaust, and Genocide Education at Echoes & Reflections, the facilitator of this workshop.

Vermont Holocaust Memorial a virtual, volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit based out of Jeffersonville, Vermont also provides exhibits, projects, and speakers. VTHM is looking for sponsors and grants to continue to enable future educational events for Vermont audiences and seeks descendants of Holocaust survivors to share their families’ stories of survival during World War II.
