Volunteering At Tamim Academy

Judy Danzig

When my 5 year old grandson was enrolled at Tamim kindergarten in the fall of 2021, I was very interested in discovering what this educational experience would be like for him.

Being retired from school counseling, I have a deep appreciation for the impact the kindergarten year has on young children. Having the time, I decided to volunteer once a week in his classroom. Read More

What I found was an amazing sense of personalized care and teaching. Because of the small class size, students were able to get individualized learning programs. Beyond the love and concern for each student, the class developed a beautiful sense of community. I was very impressed with the Jewish values and universal values that were imparted to the students.

In terms of Jewish content, I was taken with how the children learn to pray the morning blessings; learn the key values in bible stories and learn to read Hebrew and gain a Hebrew vocabulary. Children do not need any prior knowledge of Hebrew/prayer or bible to be part of this community. And of course they teach math/science/reading and have wonderful weekly field trips.

The Jewish holidays are highlights of the year and Tamim has a wonderful way of introducing Jewish holidays to children, even it’s there first time learning about them.

Tamim values family participation and are encouraged to be involved.

One special story I will share is when I recently celebrated my 70th birthday at a shabbat service at Ohavi Zedek Synagogue. The rabbi asked my family to come up and circle around to offer me blessings. My grandson, with no prompting, said, “Thank you for being alive.” This is the kind of social/ emotional learning happening at Tamim.

An amazing educational experience for children of various backgrounds and religious practices.

Check Tamim out. They would love to have you visit!
